How to Beat a Human Lie Detector

FBI agent and polygraph examiner, Bill Brown, explains how investigators watch a person’s body language to spot when they are telling a lie during an interrogation. This helps police to continue or discontinue a line of questioning to catch a suspect in a lie.

For instance, if you are being interrogated for possible murder charges and you look:

** Up and to their right – the police know you are telling a lie (if you are right handed)

** Up and to their left – the police know you are remember something and probably telling the truth (if they are right-handed)

Switch these two indicators if the person is left-handed.

Other signs you are lying include:

** Rubbing your neck
** Tapping fingers
** Leaning back in your chair
** Tightly folded hands
** Sitting to the side
** Folding your arms in front of you
** Looking at your watch
** Placing an object between the investigators and you
** Changing the subject tangentially

While you are talking, the police pay special attention to your tone of voice. If it suddenly changes, it is a good indication that you just told a lie.

Many of these signs are automatic and cannot be controlled unless you are consciously aware of your body language. Knowing the tell tale signs of a lie and practicing avoiding them, you can be a human lie detector even under stressful conditions.

Stay Brutal!
